Another Pearce Cup for Easts !!!!!

The MIGHTY EASTS Premier Team have demolised Karori inside 2 days to win by 9 wickets and the Wilkinson Pearce Cup is back in our cupboard, where it has been for 11 of the last 12 years. The boys have brought the trophy back home AGAIN !!!!!!

After Day 1 you may have had some doubts with Karori 155-10 and Easts struggling at 78-6. However a slow but steady recovery on the 2nd day saw Easts achieve 137-10, only 18 behind on the 1st Innings. Karori’s 2nd innings was then in complete disarray with some excellent bowling by Ricky Joseph taking 6-41 and Jamie Gibson 4-50. Lance Dry only used 2 of his bowlers in Karori’s 2nd innings and had them all out for 96 in 25.5 overs. What a turnaround - now it was up to Easts!!! 115 runs required to get for the win and Josh Brodie 56*, Ben Orton 38 and Josh Mclauchlan 17* got us home in 19.5 overs with some positive batting.

Congratulations to the Premier Team !!!!!

Premier Team win Ewen Chatfield Cup for 2013 in 1 Day Final

Thanks to a magnificent all-round display by 19-year-old Jamie Gibson 96* and 5-34, Easts defended their title and return to Auckland in April for another crack at the national club championship.

An incredible game it was with the Premier team in trouble from the start being 60-7 but then a 125 partnership between Jamie Gibson 96* and captain Lance Dry 32 led to the completion of the 50 overs scoring 222-8. Karori started well after opener Luke Scully scored a brisk 83 and Tom Scully 44, but were looking good in their chase before Jamie Gibson, returning from a sharp opening spell, and Lance Dry (2-10 off eight) slammed the brakes on. Karori were dismissed for 191 in the 44th over, losing seven wickets for 53.

Congratulations to the team - THE MIGHTY EASTS !!!

Man of the moment Jamie Gibson helps Wellington City team win Dempster Shield

Wellington City has taken out the Dempster Shield with two overs to spare in a frenetic three day game on the Hawkins Basin Reserve over Anniversary Weekend. Needing to win the game outright after conceding first innings, City captain Lance Dry set Hutt Valley 278 off 71 overs which proved to be a masterstroke with the latter falling two overs short. The man of the moment was Eastern Suburbs allrounder Jamie Gibson who finished Hutt off with figures of 6-25 in a spirited spell of bowling.

Jamie also top scored in the first innings (Wellington City 276) scoring 73 runs.

Lance Dry looking forward to 2013

Eastern Suburbs captain Lance Dry can’t wait for the new year. He has skippered his team to 10 of the last 11 titles and they lead this season’s competition by nine points.

He’s always advocated two tiers of six teams and this two-month preamble, or grading games as CW have called them, have been a waste of everyone’s time in his view.

"We beat Wainui by 250 and who enjoyed that? No-one," Dry said.

The pre-Christmas diet of Twenty20 and one-day cricket hasn't done much for him, either.

"The real meaningful cricket's been cut, with only five two-dayers now, when we used to have seven. They make you . . . play proper cricket, where in 50 overs, you’ve still got four or five guys dominating," he said.

"In two-day cricket, there’s more opportunity to actually play and show some skills. Captains actually have to captain too."
