El Cheapo Easts win Hazlett Trophy and Return to the Pearce Cup
The Mighty Easts will be back playing in the Pearce Cup for the 2021/22 season after a thrilling 3 wicket win over Petone Riverside on Sunday and securing the Hazlett Trophy.
Petone Riverside elected to bat and were bowled out for 208 in the first innings aided by some uncharacteristically benevolent fielding, with wickets shared between Adam Leonard 2-42 (coming off a seven wicket bag the week before), Luke Georgeson 2-54 and Jed Wiggins 3-23. Easts in reply scored 283/8 with Lauchie Johns continuing his red hot form scoring 120 off 130 ball (14 x 4 and 3 x 6) his third century in 4 innings. He was ably supported by Adam Leonard 40, Jimad Khan 34 and Xavier Aspell 31.
With a 75 run lead on the first innings Easts bowled Petone out in the second innings for 191 with a rejuvenated Patrick Howes taking 5-42 supported by Adam Leonard 2-23, and Jed Wiggins 2-60. This left Easts needing 119 to win and after some early tremors Patrick Howes 42 and Adam Leonard 13 helped calm the nervous, leaving Jed Wiggins to play a signature cover drive for 4 to seal the win with a fist pump and an over to spare.
This puts Easts in a unassailable lead with 44 points clear on top, having had outrights wins over each of the three teams below them.
Cook Shield Returns to the Mighty Easts
After a convincing win by an innings and 43 runs over University on Sunday, the mighty Eastern Suburbs has won back the Cook Shield.
The Cook Shield is the Ranfurly Shield equivalent in Wellington Premier Club Cricket, with the holder of the shield putting it on the line for every two day game with the challenger required to win outright to win the shield. Easts held the shield for the first 10 years until losing it to University in 2018.
The shield dates back to 1925 when it used be the Senior championship trophy before it was resurrected in its current format in 2008.
This was a great team effort with University bowled out for 113 in the first innings with Adam Lenard taking 5-46 on his return to Kelburn Park. Easts made 298 in reply with solid contributions from most of the batting order, Luke Georgeson 66, Jacob Logan 57, Nate Wiggins 40, Lauchie Johns 33, Xavier Aspell 29, Taine Bayly 27 and Patrick Howes 23.
With a 185 run lead, Easts applied the pressure and bowled University out for 142. The bowling was led by Jed Wiggins and Patrick Howes with some excellent spin bowling. Jed bowled a marathon 31 overs on the trot for 5-53 and Patrick bowled 22 overs at the other end for 3-32. The bowlers were supported by some excellent fielding and catches taken.

Club Record Broken
Congratulations to Fraser Colson for setting a new club record for highest T20 score with his 119 against Karori on Saturday 23 January 2021.
The previous highest score was Lauchie Johns' 104 in 2020.
Fraser's 119 came off 59 balls and contained 8 fours and 9 sixes. He was dismissed on the final ball of the innings but by then had set up Easts total of 197-6. Easts went on to win the game by 89 runs.
Milestones
Congratulations to Jed Wiggins and Luke Georgeson who both achieved significant milestones in the first half of the 2020/2021 season.
Jed Wiggins took his 100th wicket for Easts while playing against Naenae on October 28, and Luke Georgeson scored his 2000th run for Easts while playing against Petone-Riverside on December 19.

One Day Champions!
Congrats to the Premiers who have been crowned the Hazlett Trophy One Day Champions.
In the last one day round against Petone-Riverside, Easts scored 329-5 with Skipper Luke Georgeson and Fraser Colson scoring 130 and 75 respectively. Petone Riverside were bowled out for 119 with Jed Wiggins taking 5-30.

BULLDOGS WIN
The Bulldogs notched up their first win of the season on the weekend and in fact their first non-fortfeited win since Dec 2017. Wellington Collegians were bowled out for 178, with Dimitri Goumas taking 4-26. In reply the Bulldogs chased the target down with six wickets in hand. Key scores from Karl Grove 58* and David Corry 51. It was also great to see Life Member Carl Gill at the bowling crease returning 1-21 off 6 overs. Well done Lads.
WELL DONE BRACES
Congratulations and best of luck to Easts representative Easts representative, Michael Bracewell, fresh off the back of his maiden New Zealand A first-class hundred last week, Firebirds skipper Michael has been named captain of the New Zealand A side to face Pakistan Shaheens in Whangarei starting today.
ONE DAY CHAMPS
Congratulation to the unbeaten Premiers, who have claimed the Hazlett trophy one day title, with a game to spare.
GOOD LUCK JACOB
Wishing the latest member of the Easts Premiers, Jacob Madigan all the best for the National U19 tournament starting on December 17 with the first game against Central Districts at Bert Sutcliffe Oval at Lincoln. Jacob is from St Pats College and has made an impressive start in senior cricket.
IN MEMORIAM: DAN KELLY
The Club is saddened to hear of the passing of Life Member Dan Kelly on 14 December 2020, aged 92 years. Dan was always a keen supporter of Eastern Suburbs Cricket Club and his presence at Kilbirnie Park will be sorely missed. We offer our sincerest condolences to Dan’s Family.
IN MEMORIAM: TREVOR MALLOCH
Former Kilbirnie Cricket Club opening bowler Trevor Malloch, quietly passed away early last month at a Feilding rest home. He was exactly one month short of his 92nd birthday, and at the time of his death was Wellington's oldest surviving first-class player.
A fine medium-fast right-arm bowler who Don Neely described as ‘very accurate and attacked the stumps’, Trevor played 90 games for Kilbirnie, taking 370 wickets at 17.11. A modest tail ender, his top score was an unbeaten 36, while he made 625 runs at an average of 7.9.
From his childhood home in Wellington Road, Trevor attended Kilbirnie School, going on to Wellington Technical College between 1943 and 1946, with engineering as his main trade subject. There he played in the First XI alongside future New Zealand player Trevor McMahon.
He joined Kilbirnie in 1948, and in the 1953/54 season helped the club to Cook Shield success with a competition-high 59 wickets at 12.71 each. He also took most wickets in 1957/58 with 51 at 13.03, while in 1954/55 he secured 43 wickets at 14.90. The following season he took 48 wickets at 15.31 and in 1956/57 40 wickets at 19.45. Trevor’s best bowling figures came in December 1957, when he took 8-39. Other impressive returns came in November 1954 with 8-54, and in October 1956 with 7-60.
Despite his outstanding club performances Trevor played just twice for Wellington, against Central Districts and Otago in 1953/54, scoring 19 runs and capturing six wickets.
Trevor moved to Palmerston North in 1958 and joined the Old Boys Cricket Club, which also had New Zealand players Ian Colquhoun and Bryan Yuile in its ranks.
A keen and able golfer, he became a Life Member of both the New Zealand Golf Association and the New Zealand Sports Turf Institute. After being an engineer and later a company manager, Trevor became active in community affairs and chaired both the Central Power Electricity Trust and the Palmerston North Hospital Board. He was awarded a Queen’s Service Medal in the 2004 Queen’s Birthday Honours for public services.
He is survived by his wife of more than 60 years, Souter, along with their children Karen and Tony.

Kilbirnie Sports HBCA T20 Tournament Underway
This weekend (9-11 October), Easts El Cheapo Premier 2 are competing in the Kilbirnie Sports Hawke's Bay T20 Tournament, hosted by Hawke's Bay Cricket Association!
Our lads will play three rounds of pool play on Friday and Saturday, followed by finals on Sunday. The pool games are:
Friday 9 October, 3pm, vs Central Hawke's Bay Cricket Club
Saturday 10 October, 11am, vs Eden Roskill Cricket Club
Saturday 10 October, 3pm, vs Howick Pakuranga Cricket Club
